BROOKLYN NEIGHBORHOOD HIGHLIGHTS

Flatlands is one of Brooklyn’s oldest neighborhoods, with a legacy that dates back to 1636 when Dutch settlers established it as Nieuw Amersfoort. Originally inhabited by the Lenape people, the area developed into an agricultural center known for its fertile land, marshes, and productive oyster beds near Jamaica Bay. As one of the original Dutch towns on Long Island, Flatlands was slower to urbanize than other Brooklyn neighborhoods due to its early reliance on farming and limited transit access. Today, its historical structures, such as the Flatlands Dutch Reformed Church and colonial-era homes, stand as reminders of a neighborhood shaped by early colonial governance, African American labor history, and a strong connection to land. Flatlands offers a quieter but deeply storied chapter in Brooklyn’s broader urban narrative.
